Cortex, Dry, Earthy, Leathery, Oakmoss, Resinous, Woody
A foundational material for classic chypre and fougère compositions, this absolute presents a deeply complex and tenacious scent profile. Its character is primarily dry and earthy, evoking a forest floor with prominent cortex and resinous woody notes. The intricate aroma of Oakmoss Absolute also carries distinct leathery undertones, further layered with nuances of pine, herbaceous hay, and a hint of dry tobacco. Derived from the Evernia prunastri lichen, its chemical makeup, including components like evernic acid and atranorin, gives it a unique, slightly saline seaweed quality that enhances its naturalistic feel. This material is highly valued not only for its scent but also for its superior fixative properties, adding substance and longevity to a formula. Due to the presence of potential sensitizers like atranol and chloroatranol, the use of traditional Oakmoss Absolute is heavily restricted. Modern perfumery now relies on low-atranol versions that retain the core olfactive signature while meeting regulatory standards. It is most effective when used with precision, typically at dosages from 0.1% to 0.5%, to lend its signature mossy depth. In application, it forms the structural base of the chypre accord when combined with bergamot and labdanum. It also works well alongside vetiver, galbanum, and patchouli, enriching green and woody blends, and providing a grounding counterpoint to bright citrus or rich floral absolutes.
